Outcome

One week after the scans, Mr Jonhson is sitting in his favourite armchair when the phone rings.

Doctor: “How are you feeling today Mr Johnson?"

Mr. Johnson:: “Not too bad, doctor, thank you. Is everything alright?”

Doctor: “ We received the results of your brain scans. Would you like to arrange an appointment so we can have a talk?”

Mr. Johnson:: “Is there something wrong with me doctor?”

Doctor: “It's better to talk face to face. When can you come to the office?”

In a few days, Mr Johnson visits the office for another meeting. He nervously sits in the chair, alone, waiting for the doctor to speak.

Doctor: “So, Mr Johnson, I called you here today to talk about the results of your brain scans. The scans showed you have Parkinson’s Disease.” The doctor makes a needed pause for Alec to process the information. He then continues: “Are you familiar with Parkinson’s?”

Mr. Johnson:: “Isn’t it the disease that causes people's hands to shake and makes them unable to walk? Am I going to…?” Mr Johnson becomes silent. "

Doctor: “I know it’s a lot to process. Parkinson’s is disease that affects specific parts of the brain that coordinate movement. It can, yes, cause shaking and difficulty walking, but there are things we can do to slow the progression.”

Mr. Johnson:: “What kind of things? Medication”

Doctor: “Yes. Initially, we’ll start with medication to help with your symptoms. But there are also therapies — physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy—that can be very beneficial.”

Mr. Johnson: (Wringing his hands) Is there anything I need to do right away?”

"physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy—that can be very beneficial.”

Doctor: “We’ll start with prescribing medication today. I’ll also set up appointments with our physical therapist and occupational therapist. It’s crucial to build a support system around you—family, friends, support groups. You’re not alone in this, Mr. Johnson.”

Mr Johnson leaves the office with his mind racing. Although the diagnosis was daunting, he feels some hope beneath his anxiety. He returns to his familiar, safe place where his wife has just returned home. “Darling, I have got something to tell you...”
